Easy Crispy Tofu

Hello readers! Today I’m sharing possibly one of the simplest tofu recipes I’ve ever made: my easy crispy tofu! It only takes about 10 minutes to cook total, and is the perfect addition to salads, sandwiches, stir-fries, or served as an appetizer with a dipping sauce.

A bowl of easy crispy tofu over caesar salad

This time I enjoyed the easy crispy tofu over a caesar salad. The crunchy exterior and tender interior provided the perfect addition to my lunch. The breading is seasoned with garlic, nutritional yeast, and salt, making it a super easy tofu recipe for any time.

It’s pretty wild how easy these are. If you’re looking to start incorporating plant-based meals and snacks into your life but aren’t sure where to begin, give this easy crispy tofu recipe a whirl. With only a few ingredients and a lot room for modifying it to suit your tastes, this recipe has earned a permanent spot on my household’s rotation.

Look at that crunchy outside! I love this golden brown coloring on the breading. This easy crispy tofu is reminiscent of fried chicken or fish, and since it’s made with ingredients found at all grocery stores, anyone can make it! Cornstarch and panko breadcrumbs create the crispy bite of the breading that turns golden brown while frying in a neutral oil like canola or grapeseed oil. All in all, making these took me just about 10 minutes!!

I posted a process video on my Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok! If you aren’t following me over there, be sure to check them out as I am now posting 2 recipe videos per week on those platforms! As always, I will still be sharing written recipes here.

Kids love this one too! My son absolutely demolished this and asked for me to pack some in his lunch for school the next day! Enjoy this easy crispy tofu and let me know what you think of it! <3

Easy Crispy Tofu

An easy crispy tofu recipe that is perfect for adding to salads or sandwiches! Ready in 10 minutes and beginner friendly!
Prep Time 2 minutes
Cook Time 8 minutes
Course Main Course, Snack, Staples
Cuisine American
Servings 8 tofu filets

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • canola or grapeseed oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs (use gluten free if needed)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 T nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp italian seasoning

Instructions

  • Cut the tofu into about 8 slices and set aside.
  • Add canola oil to a large pan on high heat. We want the depth of the oil to be about 1/2 inch.
  • Combine all the breading ingredients in a medium sized bowl and whisk thoroughly.
  • Dredge the tofu into the breading mixture, pressing it into the filets on all sides.
  • Place the tofu filets into the oil and fry for about 8 minutes or until golden brown on both sides, flipping after about 3-4 minutes. Drain on a paper towel or a cooling rack.

Notes

DO NOT drain the tofu! We need this liquid to help bind the breading to it.
